Day 8
Route: Carlisle to Galgate - 76 miles
Today was Shap Fell day!! For those that don’t know that means up up and more up.
First stop was Penrith for a quick bite and to let locals point at us and tell us tales of how there cars struggle up Shap. Your intrepid explorers then proceeded to start up upward grind and you know what we did it , slowly yes but we did it. Then a great downhill to Kendal for a quick drink to assess the bodily damage.
After Kendal we were pootleing along I was
on my 53rd mile of a very hard day when
some fella shot past us up the hill with not
even a by your leave, well thinks I’m not
having this so I summon up the spirit of Big
Mig (who is not dead by the way) and crunch
up to my big cog. Then the chase is on, my
450 mile legs versus the ne’er do wells fresh
ones, I get to his wheel and take a breather
before launching what will probably go down
in history as the most decisive attack ever.
I got out of the saddle and powered past the
ne’er do well giving him a cheery good
afternoon as I passed then I shot off into the
distance hoping he was turning off soon as
my legs had gone to jelly. Apparently when
the Little Prince caught up with him he was
in a right state puffing and panting and
complaining about me being all competitive,
the Little Prince then turned the knife by
mentioning that we’d cycled 400 odd miles
in the last few days and he was lucky he
hadn’t tried it when we were fresh! Job Done.
Then on to Lancaster for Chips and through
the traffic to a pub in Galgate for the night.
Little Prince Update
When people in the future tell tales of heroic
deeds a new name will be joining the
Pantheon of the Immortals, that name will be
The Little Prince for today he conquered Shap
Fell without stopping , walking or even putting
a foot down. Ladies and Gentlemen a new
legend is among us.
